The ‘International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women’ is observed every year by the United Nations on 25 November to eradicate the growing incidents of violence, exploitation and abuse against girls and women. It is noteworthy that the United Nations is running a united program for the year 2030 under the Elimination of Violence against Women program.
On 25 November 1960, three sisters, Patria Mercedes Mirabel, Maria Argentina Minerva Mirabel and Maria Argentina Minerva Mirabel, who opposed the dictatorship of Dominican ruler Trujillo. Antonia Maria Teresa Mirabal was brutally murdered by Trujillo. Since 1981, women’s rights advocates started celebrating this day in memory of these three sisters, which later became an international day in 1999 by the United Nations.
